Propecia Side Effects

The common hair loss prevention drug Propecia has been linked to a number of side effects in scientific studies.  Men who take Propecia are at an elevated risk of developing high-grade prostate cancer, the deadliest and most aggressive form of this disease.  In addition to prostate cancer, other Propecia side effects include:

  • Decrease in semen production
  • Decrease in sexual desire
  • Depression
  • Ejaculation problems
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Impotence
  • Male breast cancer
  • Male breast tissue growth (gynecomastia)
  • Testicular pain

Propecia Side Effects after Treatment

According to Merck & Co., Propecia side effects should disappear after discontinuation of Propecia treatment.  “In clinical studies for Propecia, a small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, or a decrease in the amount of semen.  Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men and went away in men who stopped taking Propecia because of them.”

Unfortunately, this has not been the case with a number of men who report Propecia sexual side effects that last well after Propecia treatment is stopped.  While European Propecia labels warn that erectile dysfunction and other Propecia side effects may persist even after treatment, this warning is not present on American Propecia labels.  Because this label is present in Europe, it appears that Merck & Co. was aware of the potential for permanent sexual side effects after taking Propecia, but did not warn American consumers of this danger.  A number of American men have filed Propecia lawsuits claiming that they were not adequately warned about potentially permanent Propecia sexual side effects.
